From the widely used messaging application WhatsApp, it seems to be growing its presence in everyday online activities. The messaging service, owned by Meta, has launched a new function in India that enables users to add money to prepaid mobile numbers directly within the app. This means that individuals might not need to open other payment applications like Paytm or Google Pay; they can simply carry out transactions through WhatsApp. PayU is the provider of this feature. The company mentioned that it is being released gradually on both Android and iOS platforms and will be available to all users in the upcoming weeks. WhatsApp has included a specific rupee icon on the main screen. To start the recharge process, just click on the icon. After that, choose the mobile prepaid recharge option and pick the number you want to top up — this can be your own or someone else's. After that, confirm your mobile network and select a suitable plan. Once you finish that, choose your payment option, like UPI, a debit card, or a credit card, and finish the payment.

Importantly, in addition to recharging, this rupee icon gives quick access to UPI payments, metro ticket purchases, and other functions in the app. Users can also start payments directly from their chat windows. Looking at the bigger picture, WhatsApp appears to be aiming to transform into more than just a messaging service. It already permits transactions, bill payments, and even metro ticket bookings in some locations. With the addition of mobile recharges, it is getting closer to becoming a “one-stop” app for daily activities.

Meanwhile, WhatsApp is also looking into new methods to extend its offerings beyond basic messaging. Reports indicate that the app is testing a voluntary subscription plan, tentatively named WhatsApp Plus, which could offer various personalization features. These might consist of special sticker collections, extra theme colors, and unique app icons, along with the ability to pin more chats (up to 20) for easier access. The subscription is expected to be optional, meaning that regular users will still have free access to main features, whereas those who choose to subscribe can gain additional convenience and customization options.
