Former Australian captain Steve Waugh openly stated that no player is essential in today's cricket and therefore should not have the power to "control the game." This comment relates to BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar’s challenging position concerning the future of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in One Day Internationals.
Kohli and Rohit are among the most famous current cricketers, boasting a massive fan base. Both players are striving to participate in the 2027 ODI World Cup, but they will either be approaching or over 40 years old by then. In this highly competitive sport, few athletes maintain their place for such an extended period. Releasing either player at any point could lead to significant backlash and pressure on Agarkar, yet choosing them solely based on their past accomplishments could jeopardize India's chances of securing a first 50-over World Cup title in 16 years.
“The players must acknowledge their responsibility and understand that the game is more important than any single person," Waugh shared with journalist Vimal Kumar on his YouTube channel. “You cannot place yourself above the sport. One must understand that the game progresses and someone else will fill their position. No player is irreplaceable. Thus, players should not control the game. Ultimately, the chairman of selectors must make decisions for the greater good," he continued. Agarkar has subtly indicated that both iconic players have some leniency regarding their performances, but BCCI officials have privately communicated with several media outlets, indicating that World Cup selections will be based purely on merit. Rohit was awarded Player of the Series against Australia in his first series back, while Kohli returned to form impressively in the final match, making Agarkar’s decision even more complicated.
“As chairman of selectors, it is essential to be straightforward and clear with the players. Input is necessary. You can’t be too close to the players; some distance is required since tough decisions may need to be made. Each chairman has their own approach. I hope Ajit Agarkar has a positive relationship with the players, but he must also maintain some distance. Communication with seasoned players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma is crucial – it's important to know their thoughts. In the end, the chairman of selectors must make a decision," Waugh added.
