Every year in November, the IMD releases a winter forecast predicting severity of the winter season from December to February.

According to India Meteorological Department (IMD) chief Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, due to prevailing La Nina Conditions, the winter season might be more chilled this year.

Further he says that climate change leads to unpredictable weather more than rising temperatures. During the COVID-19 situation, temperatures dropping down is not a good sign.

What is La Nina?

It is one of the patterns of the climate that is characterized by warm ocean temperatures or cold temperatures in the equatorial region of the Pacific Ocean.

While addressing a webinar on‘Cold Wave Risk Reduction’ organised by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), this statement came up.

The cold wave is likely to get worse and cause deaths in States like Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Punjab, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh.
