Maryland To Post Publicly About Teachers License Revocation?

The Maryland state education officials have publicly posted the names of all the teachers whose licenses were revoked, a decision announced just a few days after the investigation showed that the state has offered less information than the neighboring states about the teachers who have admitted sexual misconduct with the students.

Prior to this decision, Maryland has declined to post any information about the teacher license revocations publicly.

The public officials, including the Montgomery County Council Education Committee Chairman Craig Rice, said that the lack of transparency has risked the children by making it more difficult to track the predators.

The investigation in the month of April revealed that many other states provide publicly available information to the parents with questions about teachers, who are suspected of misconduct. In many states – including New Jersey, Pennsylvania and also South Carolina, the state education agencies publicly post the names of all teachers from whom the licenses have been revoked and also the nature of the misconduct which led to the revocation.

Rice, citing to the April investigation has asked the Maryland State Superintendent of Schools Karen Salmon to consider the policy changes. Days later she has notified that the state’s board of education would begin publicly posting the names of all teachers whose licenses had been revoked and also a summary of the reasons.

The April investigation has discovered the lack of publicly available information about the teachers who have admitted the misconduct made it difficult for the former students and also parents to track the cases of those teachers.
