On Thursday, the case of a Baltimore immigrant which made a significant influence with his arrest just outside his son's school, has took a new twist. The immigrant, who was identified as Jesus Peraza, is terminating his fight in the court, to detain in the US, which may put him at a risk of immediate deportation.
In the month March, Peraza has been arrested by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents after dropping his son at school in the Southeast Baltimore. Since then Pareza has been in jail for nearly three months.
After the arrest, Peraza had been held at the Howard County Detention Center as a case of status, which means that his arrest was made due to an old deportation order, but not the result of crime against the people or property.
Through his lawyer, Peraza has made a risky decision on Thursday. He told to an immigration judge that, he no longer wants his case to be reviewed by the court.
"It is a gamble. It is a gamble, but my client and I spoke for a long time, and he is willing to gamble because he doesn't want to sit in jail any longer. It's just not a place for a person who's never committed a crime," said the attorney Jared Jaskot.
Peraza’s decision could expose him to immediate deportation, but his lawyer is asking the Immigration and Customs Enforcement directly to let him stay in the country.
Peraza argues that he has been in the country for 10 years. He has a family, a job and has also become a productive part of the American community. ICE has the authority to let him stay in the country.
Jim Hamilton, from the southeast Baltimore church, said that Peraza’s case has caused fear in the whole immigrant community.
