According to a report from Cricbuzz, the iconic Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar has engaged in discussions with officials from both the BCCI and the England Cricket Board (ECB) regarding the preservation of the Pataudi legacy within the upcoming Test series between India and England. The two governing bodies had planned to rename the series the "Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy," replacing the traditional Pataudi Trophy after the ECB's decision to retire it. This plan generated significant criticism, prompting Tendulkar to intervene to safeguard the Pataudi heritage. The report suggests that as a result of his appeal, a medallion honoring the late MAK Pataudi might be awarded to the captain of the winning team. An ECB representative confirmed, “Yes, we have a definite strategy to maintain the connection to Pataudi in the series.”
Historically, Test matches between England and India in the UK have competed for the Pataudi Trophy, which is named after Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi and his son, Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi. In March, the ECB communicated with the Pataudi family expressing their intention to retire the trophy. Widely regarded as one of the greatest players in cricket, Tendulkar remains the all-time leading run-scorer in Tests, amassing 15,921 runs. Over his career from 1989 to 2013, the 52-year-old participated in 200 Test matches and set numerous records across Test and ODI formats.
On the other hand, James Anderson stands as England's top wicket-taker and the foremost fast bowler in Test history, with a total of 704 wickets. After retiring from international cricket last summer, the 42-year-old has taken up the role of bowling consultant for the England team and continues to play county cricket for Lancashire, following a recent contract renewal. Throughout their careers, Anderson and Tendulkar clashed in 14 Tests, with Anderson claiming Tendulkar's wicket nine times—the highest number for any bowler against the Indian legend. Currently, England holds the Pataudi Trophy, having retained it after a 2-2 series draw that took place over 2021 and 2022, impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
