Mohammed Shami’s personal trainer has criticized the selection committee led by Ajit Agarkar for not including the experienced fast bowler in India’s team for the upcoming ODI series against New Zealand, beginning on January 11. Unexpectedly, Shami was not chosen for the 15-player squad that was revealed on Saturday. The 35-year-old had raised hopes for his inclusion with an impressive performance in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy, which is the top 50-over domestic tournament organized by BCCI. Just a day after being passed over for the ODI series against New Zealand, discussions about Mohammed Shami’s possible return to the Indian team have shifted from skepticism to strategic opportunity. Mohammed Shami could return to the selectors' consideration for future competitions.
The Indian selectors revealed the ODI team for the upcoming three-match home series against New Zealand, starting on January 11, and once again, Mohammed Shami was not included. Emerging players like Harshit Rana and Arshdeep Singh were chosen instead of the well-established fast bowler for the New Zealand series. This decision sparked a new discussion, particularly due to Shami’s expertise, ability to win matches, and his current performance in domestic cricket. His last game for India occurred during the successful ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign, leading many to question whether this marks the end of Shami’s international career. However, former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan has strongly disagreed with the idea that Shami's career is over. Pathan believes the veteran fast bowler still has a place on the national team.
Pathan argues that Shami’s career should not be evaluated based on a few selection decisions. He highlighted that Shami is not a rookie; he is among India’s most accomplished fast bowlers. Irfan Pathan mentioned on his YouTube channel, “The main topic of discussion is Mohammed Shami. What lies ahead for him? He isn’t someone who just appeared yesterday, played a few games, and vanished. He has taken around 450 to 500 international wickets, which is an impressive achievement. If you have over 400 wickets and then get dropped, and people start questioning your fitness—that happens to everyone. As long as you play cricket, you must continuously prove yourself. ” The former all-rounder also emphasized that Shami has already done enough to address any fitness issues. The pacer has bowled over 200 overs this season across different formats, clearly demonstrating his ability to handle the workload. Although the selectors have not explained why Shami was not chosen, Pathan has raised questions about the selection committee’s intentions.
Taking a jab at Ajit Agarkar and his team, Pathan remarked, “What additional enhancements are necessary? Only the selection committee understands their thoughts. ” The cricket expert also thinks that the upcoming IPL 2026 might be a crucial moment for Shami. He believes a successful IPL season, particularly with the new ball, could pave the way for Shami. Pathan concluded by stating, “If I were in his position, I would participate in the IPL and cause a stir. I would take the new ball and perform at an outstanding level. People talk about domestic cricket achievements, but when the IPL happens, and you display your old form and fitness, then no one can overlook you. The entire world pays attention to the IPL. If you succeed there, you can regain your spot on the team. I think his opportunities should remain open”.
